Speed measured the same way as clicking
Spacebar speed is counted exactly like mouse click speed: presses divided by seconds. This test runs for five seconds from your first press of the Space bar, so 40 presses gives a score of 8.0. The display shows the time left, your presses and your live rate while you go. Only Space counts, and holding the key down adds nothing because auto-repeat is ignored.
Your result shows the rate to one decimal, a rating, your press count and your personal best. Spacebar runs are stored separately from mouse runs in the Your scores panel, which shows your best, average, attempts and a trend chart.
Comparing your spacebar and mouse scores
Because both tests last five seconds and use the same formula, you can put the numbers side by side. Run the main CPS test with your mouse, then come back and run this one.
For a fair comparison:
- Do three runs on each test in the same session.
- Use your normal method for each, for example index finger on the mouse and thumb on the space bar.
- Compare the averages, not the single best runs.
- Swap the order next time, since the second test of a session may gain from a warm hand or lose to a tired one.
What a gap between the two means
There is no rule that says one should be faster. A mouse button is small and moves only a little. A space bar is wide, and its feel depends on the keyboard. Your thumb and your index finger are different tools with different amounts of practice behind them.
If your space bar score is well below your mouse score, try pressing with a fingertip instead of your thumb before you blame the keyboard. If it is well above, your mouse may be holding you back, and a quick check of the button on the mouse click test is worth doing.
Why spacebar speed is worth tracking
Space is the key many games use for a repeated action, and some people simply like having a second number to beat. Tracking it alongside your mouse score also shows whether an improvement comes from you or from one particular device. If both numbers rise together, your hands are getting quicker.
