    How the mouse test works

Everything happens in the box at the top. Click, scroll and double click inside it, and the panels below keep count. While your pointer is in the box, the browser menu, the back and forward actions and middle click auto-scroll are turned off, so you can press any button without leaving the page or opening a menu.

    A button-by-button check

    1. Left button. Click at a normal pace ten times. The Left count should rise by exactly ten.
    2. Right button. Click it a few times. No menu should appear, and the Right count rises.
    3. Middle button. Press the wheel down like a button. It counts as Middle.
    4. Side buttons. Press the two thumb buttons, if your mouse has them. They count as Back and Forward.
    5. Scroll wheel. Roll it slowly up, then down. If your wheel tilts, push it left and right to fill the Sideways count.

Each button you press is highlighted in the Buttons panel. A row that stays plain is either one you have not reached yet or one that is not reaching the browser.

    How to read the log

Under the panels is a time-stamped log with the newest line at the top. Each line starts with the time, then says what happened.

A left press reads “Left click” followed by the gap in milliseconds since the previous left press. Other buttons are named directly, such as “Right button” or “Back button”. Scrolling writes one line per scroll movement, with running totals for up and down, rather than a line for every tiny step of the wheel.

A highlighted warning line means two left clicks arrived less than 80 ms apart. That gap is faster than a person usually clicks on purpose, so it most likely means one press was counted twice. The double click panel adds this up as suspects and also shows the shortest gap so far.

    What the result tells you

If every count went up when you expected it to and by the amount you expected, your mouse is sending all its signals correctly. A count that rises twice for one press, or rises when you did not press anything, points to a worn switch. The double click test explains that problem in detail.

    Mouse Test FAQ

How do I test my mouse buttons?

Press each button inside the box a few times. Its row in the Buttons panel lights up and its count goes up, and the log below lists every press with the time.

Why does my side button not register?

First make sure the pointer is inside the box. If the Back or Forward count stays at zero, the button may be set to do something else in your mouse software, or its switch may be faulty.

Does the mouse test save my results?

No. It is not a scored test and keeps no history. Press Reset to clear the counts and the log.
