A counter with a timer
This spacebar counter counts every press of the Space bar for 10 seconds. The count starts with your first press, so you can take your time getting ready. While you press, the display updates live with three numbers: the time left, the number of presses so far and your presses per second.
Only Space counts. Holding the key down adds nothing, because auto-repeat is ignored, so every number on the counter comes from a real press.
Reading the live numbers
The press count is the simple one. It goes up by one for every press, so you can see your total build as you go.
Presses per second shows your pace while the clock runs. It is the number to watch in the second half of the test. If it starts to slip, you are tiring, and next time you can try a slightly calmer start so you have something left for the finish.
Your final count
When the 10 seconds are up, you get your presses per second to one decimal, a rating, your total presses and your personal best. Because the test lasts exactly 10 seconds, the arithmetic is easy: move the decimal point one place. A total of 75 presses works out to 7.5 per second, and 100 presses to 10.0.
Ways to use the counter
- Set a target. Pick a total, such as 80 presses, and try to beat it.
- Compare methods. Try your thumb on one run and a fingertip on the next.
- Challenge a friend. Take turns on the same keyboard so the hardware is equal.
- Track progress. Your scores stay in this browser, and the Your scores panel shows your best, average, attempts and a trend chart for this mode.
