Typing games built on one test
The test above has no levels and no falling words. It gives you a passage, a clock and a score. That is enough for a game. All you need to add is a rule and an opponent, and the opponent can be a friend or your own past results.
Each run works the same way. Press Start test, type the passage of about 55 words, and your score is WPM multiplied by accuracy.
Game 1: Race a friend
Take turns on one keyboard, or each open this page on your own device. You may not get the identical passage, but every passage is the same type of text and about the same length.
Play best of five. The higher score wins the round. Several rounds even out the luck of an easier or harder passage. If one player is much faster, agree a handicap before you begin and add it to the slower player’s score each round.
Game 2: Beat your average
Look at the Your scores panel and work out the average of your recent runs. That is your target. Take five runs and count how many beat it.
| Runs above your average | Verdict |
|---|---|
| 0 or 1 | Off day, try again tomorrow |
| 2 or 3 | Par |
| 4 | Strong session |
| 5 | Time to raise the target |
This game is harder than it sounds, because your average already includes your good runs.
Game 3: Accuracy only
Ignore speed completely. The goal is a run at 100 percent accuracy, with no red highlight at any point. A single wrong key ends the attempt, even if you fix it with Backspace, so start again.
Count how many attempts it takes to get one perfect run. Then try for two in a row. Of the three games, this one does the most for your speed in the long run, because it trains you to hit the right key the first time.
Keeping score
Your results are saved in this browser, so the history panel doubles as a scoreboard. For rounds that all last the same time, play any of these games on the 1 minute typing test, where every run is exactly 60 seconds.
When your hands need a rest, keep the contest going with the reaction time test or the aim trainer.
