A typing test that runs in the browser
This test is a web page. Open it, press Start test and type. There is no program to download, no extension to add and no account to create.
A passage of about 55 words appears. The clock starts on your first key and stops at the last character. You see live WPM and accuracy while you type, then a score, raw WPM and accuracy at the end.
Which devices work
| Device | How to start | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop | Press Start test and type | Full-size keys, the usual reference |
| Laptop | Same as desktop | Flatter keys with a shorter press |
| Tablet | Tap the passage, or attach a keyboard | Touch keys give no feedback under the fingers |
| Phone | Tap the passage to open the keyboard | Thumb typing, so turn off autocorrect |
A 2019 Aalto University study measured about 36 WPM on smartphones, and about 38 WPM for people typing with two thumbs. A phone score below your keyboard score is normal. Treat each device as its own scale and compare like with like.
Keyboard layout notes
You type the passage exactly as it is shown, so what matters is that your layout can produce English letters, capitals, commas and full stops. QWERTY, AZERTY, QWERTZ and Dvorak users can all take the test.
The passages contain no apostrophes or quotation marks. Those characters sit in different places on different layouts, and phones often swap them for curly versions, so leaving them out avoids errors that have nothing to do with your typing.
If your keyboard is set to an input method for another script, switch to a Latin layout before you start.
Things an online test cannot control
Your result depends on your device as well as your hands. A few checks help.
- Close heavy tabs and programs so the page responds without lag.
- Turn off autocorrect and text prediction on touch devices.
- Use the same device and browser when you compare results over time.
Your scores stay in the browser
Results are saved on the device and listed in the Your scores panel. They do not sync between devices, so a phone and a laptop each keep their own history.
