Typing Speed

Typing speed is how many words you type in a minute. Measure yours, then see what limits it.

How many words per minute can you type?

Type the passage exactly as shown. The clock starts on your first key and stops when you reach the end.

What typing speed is

Typing speed is how quickly you turn text into keystrokes. It is measured in words per minute, with a word fixed at five characters. The formula is WPM = (characters / 5) / minutes.

The test above gives you raw WPM, accuracy and a score that multiplies the two. About 40 WPM is the commonly quoted adult average.

What limits typing speed

Finger speed is rarely the limit. You can tap a single key much faster than you can type a sentence. The limits are elsewhere.

LimitWhat happensSign in your result
ErrorsEach one costs three keystrokes and breaks your rhythmScore well below raw WPM
HesitationPauses before unfamiliar words or keysLive WPM that rises and falls
Looking at the keysYour eyes leave the text and must find their place againLow speed with good accuracy
Inconsistent fingeringA key is hit by a different finger each timeErrors on the same letters

Errors are the largest cost. A wrong key takes one press to make, one to delete and one to redo, and the score counts it against accuracy even after you fix it. Touch typing, which means typing without looking at the keys, removes the third limit.

How to raise your typing speed

  1. Slow down until you are accurate. Clean keystrokes at a modest pace come first. Speed returns as your fingers learn where the keys are.
  2. Anchor on the home row. A S D F for the left hand and J K L ; for the right. Return there after each reach.
  3. Keep your eyes on the text. Cover your hands if you have to.
  4. Use the same finger for the same key. Consistency matters more than which finger you choose.
  5. Practice little and often. Ten minutes a day works better than one long session a week.

What faster typists have in common

A 2018 study by Aalto University and the University of Cambridge of 168,000 volunteers found that the fastest typists made fewer errors. They also used rollover typing, pressing the next key before the previous one was fully released. Both habits come from repetition at a pace you can control.

Measure, then repeat

Take three runs, note the average and come back in a week. The typing test practice page turns these steps into a daily routine, and good typing speed shows which band your score falls in.

Typing Speed FAQ

What is typing speed?

It is the rate at which you type, measured in words per minute. A word is counted as five characters, so the figure is based on keystrokes and not on real word lengths.

What slows typing speed down the most?

Errors, for most people. Each mistake costs the wrong keystroke, the Backspace and the retyped key, and it breaks your rhythm.

Can I improve my typing speed?

Yes. Typing is a practiced motor skill, so it responds to practice. Short daily sessions that put accuracy first are the most reliable way to raise it.
