What you get for free

All five tests on this page are free. There is no account to create, no email to hand over and nothing to download. Open a test, press start, and you have a score in about a minute. You can replay as many times as you like.

Each test covers a different kind of memory: digits, patterns of squares, words, numbered positions and ordered sequences.

How your scores are stored

Scores are saved in your browser, on the device you are using. Nothing is tied to a login, because there is no login. Your results appear in the score panel on each test and are gathered on the dashboard.

Two things follow from that. Your history stays with this device and browser, so a phone and a laptop keep separate records. And clearing your browser data can remove the saved scores.

A 5 minute session

One run of each test, in this order, takes roughly five minutes.

  1. Number memory. A simple warm-up. Type back a number that gains a digit each round.
  2. Visual memory. Switch from digits to patterns and tap the squares that flashed.
  3. Verbal memory. Mark each word Seen or New until your three lives are gone. This one can run longer than the others if you are doing well.
  4. Chimp test. Tap hidden numbers in order. It asks for position and order together, so it helps to be warmed up.
  5. Sequence memory. Finish by repeating a growing pattern of tiles until your first mistake.

The first four alternate between speech-based and visual tasks, so you are not leaning on the same kind of memory twice in a row.

Making sense of the results

Typical results are 7 to 8 digits, 7 to 9 visual levels, 25 to 45 on verbal, 7 to 9 numbers on the chimp test and 6 to 9 sequence steps. Your first session is mostly about learning the rules, so repeat it on another day before you read much into the numbers.

These are games for curiosity and self-tracking. They cannot diagnose or rule out any condition. If you are worried about your memory, see a doctor.

To learn what each test measures, read the memory test guide. For help choosing a single test and setting up your device, see memory test online.

Free Memory Test FAQ

Is the memory test really free?

Yes. All five tests are free to play as often as you like, and none of them asks for an account or an email address.

Where are my free memory test scores saved?

In your own browser, on the device you played on. They are listed on the dashboard, and they do not follow you to another device or browser.

Can a free memory test tell me if my memory is normal?

It can show how your score compares with typical results, such as 7 to 8 digits on the number test. It cannot diagnose any condition, so if you are worried about your memory, see a doctor.
