Auditory Reaction Time Test

Turn your sound on, wait for the beep and react as fast as you can.

Click as soon as you hear the beep.

Turn your sound on. A short beep plays after a random wait. Click, tap or press Space when you hear it. Five tries, averaged.

How the auditory reaction time test works

Turn your sound on, then press Start test. The screen stays the same, so there is nothing to watch for. After a random wait a short beep plays. Click, tap or press Space the moment you hear it.

You get five tries, and your score is the average in milliseconds. Responding before the beep cancels that try and it is repeated. If you hear nothing at all, check that the device is not muted.

Sound versus sight

SignalTypical reaction time
SoundAbout 170 ms
SightAbout 250 ms

People respond to sound faster than to light, typically by 30 to 50 ms. The reason comes early in the chain. The ear turns sound into a nerve signal faster than the retina does with light, so the message reaches the brain’s processing areas sooner.

Athletics relies on this. Its false start rule is built around sound: a start faster than 100 ms after the gun is ruled a false start, because about 100 ms is treated as the floor for a real reaction.

Compare sound scores separately

Sound scores usually come out faster than visual scores, so keep the two apart. A sound average that beats your visual average does not mean you improved. It means the signal changed. For the same reason, the score bands used for the visual test do not apply to this page.

A fair comparison is to take both tests on the same device and look at the gap between your two averages. The visual version is the standard reaction time test.

Tips for an accurate reading

  • Set a clear volume. The beep should be easy to hear without being startling.
  • Prefer wired audio. Headphones can add delay, and Bluetooth headphones especially. That delay lands in your score.
  • Cut background noise. Music or talk in the room makes the beep harder to pick out.
  • Keep your finger ready. Rest it on the mouse button or the Space key.
  • Do not guess. The wait is random, and an early press only repeats the try.

What the result tells you

Your average shows how quickly you respond to a sound on this device. Audio hardware adds its own delay, so treat the number as a personal baseline and not an exact measurement. For typical figures across the senses, see average reaction time.

Auditory Reaction Time Test FAQ

What is an auditory reaction time test?

It measures how quickly you respond to a sound instead of a visual signal. Here a short beep plays after a random wait, you click, tap or press Space, and five tries are averaged in milliseconds.

Why is my sound score faster than my visual score?

Sound reactions are typically 30 to 50 ms faster than visual ones, because signals from the ear reach the brain's processing areas sooner than signals from the eye. Compare sound scores only with other sound scores.

Do Bluetooth headphones affect the result?

They can. Wireless audio adds delay between the browser playing the beep and you hearing it, and that delay is counted in your score. Wired headphones or the device speakers are the safer choice.
